The role of crop rotations in the formation of the pore space of the plough layer of leached chernozem in the forest-steppe zone of Zauralye

 Porosity is one of the most important indicators of soil fertility, which has a direct impact on the agrophysical properties, water and air regime of soil and growing conditions of crops. Despite the wide range of tillage tools, allowing qualitatively cultivation of plough lands, the importance of crop rotations is undoubted in the formation of plow layer with the optimum ratio of the solid phase and the volume of voids between the structural aggregates. Research has shown that in the forest-steppe zone of Zauralye grain-fallow crop rotation (full fallow – wheat – wheat) supports the pore space of leached chernozem in a stable state due to the high interaggregate porosity that reaches 20 % of the volume of soil. Aggregate porosity in the plough horizon has decreased from 36–43 % to 30–37 % of the volume of soil after rotation of given crop rotation. Introduction of perennial grasses in the crop rotation positively influences on the quality of pore space,  not only in the plough (0–30 cm) but also in the subsurface horizon  (30–50 cm), meanwhile interaggregate porosity after grain-grass and grass crop rotations remained at a level 9–13 % of the soil volume.     Replacement of perennial herbaceous vegetation on annual grasses increases dehydration of leached chernozem and contributes to the  destruction of the structural aggregates with the subsequent filling of  large voids with fine earth, which negatively influences on interaggregate porosity, whose value after grain-grass with full fallow crop rotation reached 2–7 % of soil volume, that is critical for normal aeration of subsurface horizons.
